Justice Beyond the Binary
Gender identities, expressions, and ways of being outside of the gender binary have always existed. Nonbinary identities are special, beautiful and worthy of dignity and respect.
Unfortunately, our community experiences very high levels of discrimination. Over 3 in 4 nonbinary people have experienced discrimination in the past 12 months.
Discrimination should not be something that we expect, and it is not something that we have to accept. When you know your rights, you can stand against discrimination before it happens and be empowered to fight against discrimination in your life and in your community.
As of 29th April 2024, nonbinary people in QLD are protected under antidiscrimination laws. This means that you have the right to have your gender identity and expression recognised and respected. You cannot be refused service by business, clubs or healthcare providers. You cannot be fired from your job. Your school or workplace must respect your name and pronouns, and you should be able to wear a uniform and use a bathroom that makes you feel safe and comfortable.
